Toward a Transfer-Conscious University: Fulfilling the Promise of Community College Pathways

Available for Preorder with Johns Hopkins University Press

In this book, I draw on four years of longitudinal data from community college transfer students in computer science. I center the extraordinary and diverse stories of how these students navigate university environments that too often treat them as an afterthought, supplementing their stories with interviews from faculty and staff to provide a more complete picture of transfer pathways through universities.

Despite advocacy from individual transfer champions and large-scale efforts to streamline transfer, my book illustrates how university faculty and staff systematically overlook and deprioritize transfer students. Because of widespread indifference about transfer pathways within academic departments, even the most successful transfer students are frequently subjected to unnecessary precarity as they navigate university policies and practices that weren’t built for them.

I close the book with a framework—and companion discussion guide—for disrupting transfer indifference by building a transfer-conscious university, starting with raising transfer consciousness, systematically reviewing policies and practices, and ultimately institutionalizing transfer consciousness within academic departments and across universities.
